Integration of DTS in an ICD system

Sensornet and Flotech offer this ground-breaking solution to enable real time optimisation throughout the well’s life and dramatically reduce the need for PLT intervention. The Sensornet DTS system is installed across the entire horizontal open-hole section to allow continuous real-time monitoring of flow contribution from the Flotech passive inflow control device (ICD) system. Inflow control devices along with open hole packers fully exploit the benefits associated with production and injection in horizontal wells.

Applications that benefit from this solution include:

  • Horizontal Producers
  • Horizontal Injectors

Close the Monitoring Gap

The combination of Flotech and Sensornet’s revolutionary technologies bridges the gap between assumption and knowledge, allowing the operator to fully understand the performance and integrity of a well or reservoir in order to maximise its potential, without added expense, time or potentially hazardous intervention. The solution overcomes the limitations of measurement technologies available today to close the Monitoring Gap.

Monitoring gap with existing technology

Historically, due to reservoir heterogeneities, the production/injection profile along the horizontal section is uneven, favouring coning of undesired fluids. Even after the installation of inflow control devices, the operator needs to monitor the well performance with time, along the horizontal section, which requires expensive production logging campaign deployed with Coiled Tubing or a Tractor, that could also pose a well integrity risk. The use of DTS either in producer or injector wells allows the minimisation of logging and real time monitoring during the entire well life, allowing real time optimisation, at much reduced cost and risk.

Sensornet and Flotech’s Solution

FloMatik ICD production system maximises reservoir drainage along the entire open-hole horizontal section of production wells, as well as effectively monitoring the flow profile of injectors during injection start up or well warm back. Being continuously monitored by the permanently installed DTS system will not only confirm the production allocation and detect any changes in the flow profiles over time, but it will also dramatically reduce the need for PLT intervention which brings significant financial benefits to the operator.

The DTS system also enables continuous monitoring during the installation.  This provides the operator real-time data during all phases of the completion, allowing performance testing and confirmation on functionality of other completion components. In case of problems with running of the completion during the installation, the DTS can pinpoint the exact location of events to optimize and reduce costs of future installations.

The Sensornet SureSight™ cable is deployed along the entire well and can be passed through either production packers or swell packers which are used for zonal isolation of production zones in the open-hole section. Sensornet engineers can install pressure testable splice assemblies installed above each packer with negligible optical losses if required.
