Sensornet and HydroResearch have collaborated on providing the latest developments in fibre optic dam monitoring solutions since 1998. The combination of Sensornet's distributed temperature and strain sensors and HydroResearch's algorithm's and software solutions is a powerful one and has led to large advances in seepage and movement monitoring, thus improving the safety of dams and their surrounding areas.
This technology can be used in both embankment dams (earth dams) and in concrete dams. In embankment dams distributed temperature sensors can detect abnormal leakage (seepage) increase which can lead to internal erosion problems and ultimately failure of the dam and by providing an early warning system action can be take before it is too late. In concrete dams both temperature and strain are monitored to evaluate the structural integrity of the dam, detecting cracks before they can proliferate.
